He earned his BS and MD from the University of Iowa before completing a pathology residency in pathology from the University of North Carolina and a prestigious fellowship in forensic pathology at the North Carolina Chief Medical Examiner's Office. He is very active in his field as a member of multiple professional societies and is a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Scientists, the College of American Pathologists, and the National Association of Medical Examiners. In addition, he has published 2 books on forensic pathology and death investigation and over 60 peer-reviewed articles. Formerly, he has held many roles in the forensic pathology field as a death investigator for the state of South Dakota and the deputy medical examiner for the state of Iowa. He currently serves as a professor of pathology at a major medical school in South Dakota, is a forensic pathologist for a consulting group, and is a medical director for a forensic laboratory.
