This surgical technology case takes place in Colorado and involves a patient who underwent a hysterectomy using a da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. The patient suffered thermal rectal burns and perforation that went unrecognized at the time of the surgery. She subsequently developed a massive infection that required emergency medical intervention, as well as multiple corrective surgeries. As a result of this infection the patient nearly died, and has been left with a range of debilitating injuries that will impact her quality of life indefinitely. It is alleged that the robotic surgery system was negligently designed and/or manufactured, and that such an outcome could have been prevented.
