This legal case concerned a patient who had developed eight uterine fibroids and required a myomectomy to remove the tissue. During the myomectomy, there was a miscount between the number of uterine fibroids removed and the number indicated in earlier pathologic findings. Post operatively, the ultrasound revealed that the treating OB-GYN failed to remove the largest uterine fibroid, which was nearly the size of a tennis ball. The patient required an additional surgery and developed numerous complications as a result of the extra procedure. An expert in fibroid removal was required to opine on the procedure.

The myomectomy is one area of my expertise. I have never failed to remove a significant uterine fibroid. It is possible in this case that the fibroid was not enucleated from the uterus, or it was removed and left in the abdomen and pelvis, thus creating a parasitic myoma.
